Maxim Networks Ltd, the UK subsidiary of France’s OST SA, claims its new Magellan product is the first router capable of providing X25 and ISDN communications with automatic back-up facilities. A feature designed to keep costs down keeps calls over ISDN as short a time as possible, with automatic B channel release and reconnection depending on the traffic level from the router. Access control from the wide area network is managed at both the wide area level and the local network level, to prevent access violation from the local network. The basic configuration of Magellan is one Ethernet connection – using either 10Base-5, 10Base-2 or 10Base-T – and two wide area connections, for the two B channels of an ISDN BR1 or two X25/DSO channels.
