The Broderbund unit of The Learning Co has licensed over one million clip art, web and photographic images for online use from Corel’s GraphicCorp division. Broderbund, a games and home productivity software developer, owned by toy giant Mattel Inc, is being very cagey about what it will use the images for and a spokesperson refused to comment on the deal, saying only that the images are not for coding into packaged software.

However, when Corel bought GraphicCorp in April of this year, the company said that it would push further licensing of GraphicCorp’s images, which are already used by 61% of the top 100 consumer graphics and clip art collections in the retail market. The Broderbund spokesperson refused to comment on suggestions that Broderbund would use the images to develop its online services.
