Matsushita Electric Industrial Co is joining the rush to add memory chip fabrication capacity, investing $660m in a new plant at its existing base in Puyallup, Washington. Matsushita Semiconductor Corp of America is a joint venture of the parent and its now wholly-owned Matsushita Electronics Corp. They will start construction in April and begin production in October 1997, doing 12,000 8 wafers a month of 4M-bit and 16M-bit dynamic memory chips, 16-bit microcontrollers, and other types of semiconductors. The two will also invest $60m to site an assembly plant in Jakarta, Indonesia.
