Matsushita Electric Industrial Co has completely redesigned the conventional cathode ray tube to create a 14 screen just 3.9 thick, and will launch it in a television set on October 1. The price is currently high at $2,700, but will fall to the price of conventional sets once high volume production is under way. It calls the screen – equally appropriate for computer displays Flat Vision, and plans 6 and 21 versions. Details of the technology were not available on Friday, but it divides the display area into 10,000 cells, each scanned by a separate electron beam under digital control using electrostatic deflection.
