The Mars Pathfinder space project, scheduled to land on July 4, has a computer operating system incorporating software from Alameda, California-based company Wind River Systems Inc. VxWorks is serving as the operating system for the Lander, used for examining the planet’s surface in a scientific capacity which will transmit pictures of the plant back to earth. VxWorks is said to be incredibly fast and very reliable and will also control the flight of Pathfinder, carrying out flight corrections and controlling the spin of the vehicle.
