Mannesmann Mobilfunk GmbH is supply-constrained – it says it would be difficult to broaden the base of the German cellular phone market quickly because of a shortage of telephones because chipmakers had underestimated how fast the market would grow and chip production was around 18 months behind schedule; Mannesmann wants to lay its own cables to link its cell sites, but while the ministry is studying whether to allow alternative networks, it has said approval for any project would not come until 1996 because of the time needed to pass legislation to make it possible; the company is now promising a clear profit for 1994 and says it expects to have 850,000 D2 network subscribers by the end of the year.
