MANNESMANN BOOSTS SUBSCRIBERS BY 52% IN A YEAR

By CBR Staff Writer

It has been a spectacular year for Mannesmann Mobilfunk GmbH. The private cellular provider grew its subscribers in 1997 by 52%, or 1.2 million, to a total of 3.5 million. As a result, revenue climbed 33% to $3.9bn. The company invested $561m in its network in 1997 and expects to invest a similar sum in 1998. To date, Mannesmann has invested a total of $3.09bn in its network since it began operations. The company also expects that results for 1998 will be significantly above those of this year. Customer response to Mannesmann’s pre-paid package deal for young subscribers, D2-CallYa has exceeded expectations, registering over 90,000 customers since its launch in October.
