Cable & Wireless Plc is rearranging the management furniture again in the wake of the departure of Gordon Owen: Lord Young as executive chairman will now have two executive directors reporting to him: Mercury Communications Ltd chief executive Peter van Cuylenburg becomes group director with responsibility for business in all the Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development countries, otherwise known as the Developed World, and Brian Pemberton gets the same title to cover the developing world – but that includes Hong Kong, which is on its way to becoming part of China; and, kicking a bank when it’s down if not out, the company has gone to Midland Bank Plc and hired away Michael Harris, the head of the First Direct telephone banking operation, to become the new chief executive of Mercury.
