Windows-on-Unix outfit Mainsoft Corp said it has signed a new agreement with Microsoft Corp which gives it access to specific Windows NT source code, up to and including NT 5.0. Mainsoft says the new agreement allows it to continue development and support of its MainWin XDE product through the next generation of its Windows-on-Unix. MainWin XDE allows developers to write a single source code, using Windows APIs, for applications that can be deployed on both operating systems. It also allows them to automatically re-host Windows NT apps on Unix platforms. Mainsoft could not be reached to discuss the specifics of the agreement, but the company appears to be enjoying a healthier relationship with Microsoft than some others have had in the recent past. Both AT&T Corp and Bristol Technology Inc have filed suit against Redmond in an effort to gain access to the NT 5.0 source code, as well as that for other versions of Windows. While AT&T settled its suit on undisclosed terms, the Bristol case is ongoing. The source code issue was also raised in Microsoft’s well-publicized antitrust case with the Justice Department and 20 states. In outlining its reasons for resisting the DOJ’s demands that the company turn it over as evidence in the case, Microsoft referred to the source code as the software equivalent to the formula for Coca-Cola.
