MADGE TO ADD WIDE AREA ASYNCHRONOUS MODE WITH TELEOS BUY

By CBR Staff Writer

Buying again, Madge Networks Inc is to acquire Eatontown, New Jersey wide area access switch designer and builder Teleos Communications Inc for $165m in new Madge shares at closing. Madge also agreed to a binding letter of intent with Cisco Systems Inc to license Teleos’s ISDN switching technology to Cisco for use as a building block in Cisco’s universal access server products. Madge in turn will license the Cisco Internetwork Operating System for integration into a future wide area network AccessSwitch. Madge describes the acquisition is a major milestone in its strategy to move to next generation Asynchronous Transfer Mode high-speed networking standards, adding wide area switching to its existing portfolio of Token Ring, Ethernet and Asynchronous Transfer Mode local area network switching products and technology, giving it a product set that provides complete, end-to-end switched networks for the integrated delivery of data, speech and video to the corporate desktop.
