San Jose, California-based Madge Networks Inc has announced a new Token Ring adaptor supporting fibre optic cabling. The product, which has been launched as an extension to the company’s Smart 16/4 Ringnode product line, is said to support the IEEE 802.5j standard for transmission over fibre optic cable enabling direct connection to any compliant wiring concentrator without the need for fibre optic converters, while an in-built compatability mode is also said to provide support for non-conformant hubs. It comes with 256Kb of on-board memory, support for 16-bit programmed input-output and bus master data transfer, and server drivers based on the company’s Fastmac Plus software. In addition, Madge says that with SynOptics Communications Inc it has tested the product for compatability with the latter’s Model 3504-ST Token Ring Fibre Host Module. Available now, the Smart 16/4 Fibre AT Ringnode is $1,000.
