Apple has also been demonstrating the System 7 release of the Macintosh operating system to developers and says that it will go into beta test shortly. The new release will support virtual memory on Macintoshes using the 68030 chip – the first 68000 to have a virtual memory manager on chip – so that if main memory becomes overloaded, the operating system can automatically write stuff off to disk and swap it back in again when needed. A new file sharing facility enables users on a LocalTalk network to share designated file folders and access their files stored on a remote disk from another Mac. It also means that System 7 can be installed remotely on multiple Macs from a remote location, and applications can be similarly distributed; it will need a Mac Plus up and 2Mb memory.
