M/A-COM TO SELL TELECOMMUNICATIONS DIVISION TO HUGHES AIRCRAFT

By CBR Staff Writer

M/A-Com Inc is to sell its M/A-Com Telecommunications Division in Germanton, Maryland and San Diego to General Motors’ Hughes Aircraft Co for an undisclosed sum in cash. The unit supplies equipment and systems for commercial satellite and terrestrial communications, including very small aperture earth stations, packet switching network and data switching products for use by telephone companies, and had sales of over $100m in fiscal 1986. Hughes owns and operates one of the largest fleets of commercial communications satellites in the world, and M/A-Com decided to sell because it wants to concentrate on digital commmunications systems for defence applications, and on microwave components.
