Following last week’s report that claimed the most popular second-level domain on the net was lucent.com, with more than twice as IP addresses mapping to it than any of the world’s largest service providers, Lucent Technologies Inc is convinced the report is erroneous and describes it as a false positive.

It says an internal census last fall showed slightly more than 200,000 machines running off the domain, not the 4.7 million that Network Wizards found in its latest biannual report. In the previous report lucent.com did not even feature in the top-100 second-level domains and even though it suddenly appeared above aol.com, uu.net and others, nobody at Network Wizards, or the report’s sponsor, the Internet Software Consortium thought this to be odd. The ISC did say Friday that it would look at it again, but so far nobody at Network Wizards has got back to us.
