According to Lucent, mobile operators that upgrade their current-generation (cdmaOne) networks to CDMA2000 will have the capability to double their network’s voice capacity and increase data-transmission speeds nearly 10 times.

Once the CDMA2000 1X voice upgrades are successfully installed and tested,

Lucent says it will begin to ready the networks to accommodate data traffic at speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second for mobile internet applications.

The CDMA2000 technology complies with the international 3G standards established by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and can be deployed using existing spectrum. Its compatibility with existing networks as well as technology being developed is a key feature of CDMA2000.
