From one in-box, users will be able to browse the Web, check and send voice and e-mail messages, initiate calls from their address book via voice command, and attach e-mail to voicemail messages (and vice versa). Messages can also be bookmarked by voice command so users can easily jump back to them later.

Aimed at the service provider market, the solution will integrate the AnyPath[tm] Messaging System — a next-generation multimedia messaging platform from Lucent with the iPlanet[tm] Portal Server, the iPlanet[tm] Portal Server: Mobile Access Pack and Sun’s carrier-grade Netra[tm]servers.

Lucent’s strength in carrier-class messaging products, combined with the flexibility and scalability of the iPlanet Portal Server and Sun platform, will offer mobile service providers the industry’s most robust set of unified communications capabilities, said J.J. Lhospital, vice president and general manager of the Messaging Solutions Group at Lucent. Our combined solution will truly help people better manage their communications, and their lives.

AnyPath supports traditional voicemail capabilities and allows end-users to access fax, e-mail, short text messages and Web content from any mobile phone, PC, Web browser or other communications device. The AnyPath solution from Lucent will leverage the iPlanet Portal Server to aggregate content and services from many different data sources, including voice, fax and e-mail messages, calendar entries, or Internet channels — and deliver these services in a highly personalized way to end-users based on the user’s identity and preferences.

Together, Lucent and iPlanet will enable service providers to offer their customers a rich end-user experience. Users will obtain a flexible portal front-end tied into a voice and data back-end that can be accessed anywhere, anytime, from any mobile phone, PDA, PC or Web browser.

This fully integrated, bundled solution is designed to meet the unique needs of service providers by enabling faster time to market. The AnyPath Messaging System integrates easily with existing voicemail systems, and because it is based on open standards, it provides flexibility in rolling out future services and allows services to be extended to a multitude of mobile devices. Services can also be easily customized and branded by service providers. As part of an OEM agreement with Sun, the solution is immediately available from Lucent worldwide. Lucent customers will also be able to choose to use the award-winning iPlanet[tm] Calendar Server and the iPlanet[tm] Messaging Server.

Additionally, the iPlanet Portal Server: Mobile Access Pack, the latest addition to the industry’s broadest Portal Server product line, will be generally available to customers in October. The iPlanet Portal Server: Mobile Access Pack extends the iPlanet Portal Server’s multi-channel, dynamic content to any WAP or i-mode device, and provides support for the most requested mobile services such as short message service (SMS) and location-based services.

The combined iPlanet and Lucent solution illustrates the value the iPlanet Portal Server brings to the unified messaging solution by enabling aggregation, personalization and administration and delivering a rich portal interface to the end user through any device, said Mark Tolliver, president and general manager for iPlanet. Independently, each of the components from iPlanet, Lucent and Sun are industry leading products. Combining these solutions delivers an unparalleled new value proposition.
