Sun Microsystems Inc is set to spell out its Java media specification at the first day of JavaOne in San Francisco today. But unable to wait for that, Lucent Technologies Inc has highlighted its input into the Internet-telephony integration part of the spec. The pair have come up with a Java telephony object specification that will enable developers to write Java applications that link voice and data connections, to tap into existing computer-telephony integration systems and enable the sharing of voice, data, electronic mail, fax, and video. Lucent has already demonstrated one such application that managed conference calls on a voice network from a computer, with the potential for sharing documents in a virtual conference room as well, the company said. The spec will enable integration of existing call control software standards, such as Novell Inc’s TSAPI and Microsoft Corp’s rival TAPI, and Sun’s Solaris- based SunXTL.
