Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group has launched its second generation EVRC speech coding chip, doubling the memory of the previous version. The EVRC Pro, aimed at the CDMA Code Division Multiple Access market, integrates digital signal processor and voice codec on the same chip, enabling smaller mobile phone designs. It has 72 kilobytes of read only memory, and a performance of 100 MIPS at 3 volts. It is available in the US at $50 in sample quantities. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, Hyundai Electronics Industries Co Ltd and LG Information & Communications Ltd are using current versions of the chip in their CDMA wireless phones and base stations.
