Lucent Technologies Inc has wound up its St Petersburg manufacturing venture with Dalnyaya Svyaz – the largest telecommunications firm in the city. The joint venture had been making multiplexers. Lucent says both demand and production has been steadily falling since late 1994 and in 1996 a decision was made to call a halt to the venture. Lucent has now bought out Dalnyaya Svyaz and owns 100% of the now dormant company. This leaves Lucent with production facilities that it has yet to decide on a use for. It says that it is still committed to manufacturing in Russia and would like to assemble AT&T Corp 5ESS digital exchanges locally and later even manufacture some of the components.
