Lucent Technologies Inc’s Digital Video division has formed an alliance with EMC Corp to provide digital video servers to the broadcasting industry. The two are aiming products at broadcast, cable and direct broadcast satellite customers that will need high-performance servers to deliver the playback of high-quality video material, such as HDTV. The combined product line is to include Lucent’s MPEG-2 encoder, the Lucent Digital Video System, with EMC’s Celerra Media Sever, based on its Symmetrix enterprise storage box. The combination can replace multiple racks of video tape recorders and large video library systems, according to the partners. At the International Broadcasters Conference in Amsterdam this week, Lucent and EMC plan to stream an ATM signal over the surface station STM-1.
