Milpitas, California-based LSI Logic Corp has announced the L64000 MPEG2 video decoder chip, compliant with the latest MPEG2 standard. The firm will combine the video decoder with an MPEG two-channel audio decoder into a single-chip device in the summer. This part will be backward pin-compatible with the L64000, so should reduce system costs. The decoder is the first in a planned MPEG2-based family that consists of Application Specific Standard Products and LSI Logic’s CoreWare system building blocks, enabling the development of customised chips for MPEG2 systems. The company will also develop a 16-VSB (Vestigal SideBand) demodulator/FEC Forward Error Correction chip with Zenith Electronics Corp. First samples will be with key customers in January. Volume pricing will be $250 to $300 in 1995.
