LSI Logic Corp has finally closed its outdated Milpitas, California plant, which has been under sentence of closure ever since 1992, when LSI took a charge to cover the cost. Last week the company shut the plant and laid off 115 people – according to PC Week, production had slowed to 800 6 wafer starts per week, using 0.7- and 0.8-micron technologies. The new plant in Gresham, Oregon, scheduled to come on line next year, will use 0.25 micron technology and is expected to produce an average 4,000 8 wafer starts per week. Manufacturing at Milpitas will be shifted to LSI’s Gresham, Santa Clara, and Tsukuba plants.
