LSI LOGIC AGREES TO MANUFACTURE SUN’S SPARC RISC

By CBR Staff Writer

LSI Logic Corp, Milpitas, California, which already has an agreement to manufacture MIPS Computer’s RISC, has become the fourth company to agree to manufacture Sun Microsystems Inc’s SPARC RISC microprocessor and says it will show no favouritism to one or other: the LSI Logic version, in 0.9 micron HCMOS, will be available in May, and the company will offer the part both as a standard microprocessor in a range of performances, and will add custom circuitry on the chip to meet specific customers’ requirements; the other three companies manufacturing SPARCs are Fujitsu Microelectronics Inc; Cypress Semiconductor Corp; and Bipolar Integrated Technology Corp.
