Lotus Development Corp is planning to improve XML support in its Domino server software and ensure tighter integration between its groupware and the Windows 2000 operating system when it eventually hits the market. The IBM company plans to roll out these changes under the R5 release schedule, it has called the project R5-Next or R5-X.

A spokesperson for Lotus said that the company would improve XML support by exposing XML code that already exists in Domino, enabling easier access for developers. Lotus will improve the scalability of its server software. The company will improve the integration between Windows 2000 and Notes/Domino by beefing up the COM capabilities of its groupware. Lotus expects Microsoft to ship Windows 2000 in the first or second quarter of next year. The Lotus spokesperson said that the company was in talks with Microsoft to ensure that the Windows 2000-compliant software will ship at the same time as the operating system.
