According to BusinessWeek, Lotus Development Corp chairman Jim Manzi became the highest-paid US executive in 1987 with salary, bonuses and stock options totalling $26.3m, beating the 1986 winner, Chrysler’s Lee Iacocca by a distance: $26m may sound a lot from a company whose total turnover was just under $400m, but a large part of it was made up of stock options exercised before Meltdown Monday, October 19.
