Windows Server 2008, which we have been saying would Release to Manufacturing (RTM) by the end of the calendar year, is now slated to R in the first quarter of calendar year 2008, the company said on a corporate blog yesterday.

But the company said that it is sticking to February 27 2008 as the official launch date for Longhorn, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008. Microsoft has a launch event planned in Los Angeles.

Development work on Windows Server 2008 has recently become aligned with work on Windows Vista Service Pack 1, the first update to the client version of the operating system, the company said yesterday (see separate story).
