Telecom*USA Inc has now formally come into being in Atlanta, Georgia as the holding company for SouthernNet Inc and Teleconnect Co, which will continue to trade in their respective regions under their existing names. Telecom*USA is now the fourth-largest long distance carrier in the US, albeit a long way behind US Sprint Communications Co and MCI Communications Corp. The SouthernNet operations include a 2,200 mile transmission network serving more than 200,000 long distance customers in 10 south-eastern states. Teleconnect provides long distance telephone services to more than 200,000 customers, mainly in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota and South Dakota. It also provides telemarketing and direct mail services and markets telephone equipment.
