UK IT services firm Logica Plc has won a contract with energy providers ScottishPower and Scottish & Southern Energy worth 8m pounds ($12.9m) over five years, as the two utilities step up their æ1998 deregulationÆ plans. These plans were initiated by legislation in 1994 privatizing the energy sector. Logica will provide application support for meter asset registration and data collection to enable the two utilities to keep a track of demand and modify supply of energy to households which are now geographically widespread than they were under the traditional, regional power provider system. Logica has worked with the utilities before, during the liberalization of the UK utilities market, when it developed common systems for the Scottish firms.
