Chris Sontag, vice president and general manager of SCOsource, the SCO business unit pressing the case against IBM, told ComputerWire yesterday that SCO is confident it has a case against Linux vendors.

Sontag said: We are confident of the research we have done thus far that there are IP infringement issues in Linux and most major distributions. Sontag claimed elements of SCO’s System 5, which he was unwilling to identify, had been used in Linux distributions.

There had been munging of code and significant code violations Sontag said.

Sontag spoke after press reports emerged yesterday that identified Linux vendor SuSE Corp, among others, as potential targets for action from SCO.

A SuSE spokesperson said the company was unaware of any vendors’ proprietary code used in its own Linux or the related UnitedLinux project. The spokesperson added SuSE and UnitedLinux have appropriate technology cross licensing arrangements with all partners, including SCO.
