The FSG is responsible for the Linux Standards Base 2.0 specification, which is a blueprint for keeping the Linux kernel and the commercial Linux distributions that are based on it from diverging and therefore wreaking havoc among server makers and application software providers, as well as the OpenI18N, internationalization initiative.

It has appointed Arthur Tyde as its CTO provide technical leadership across its workgroups and technical projects. Tyde was formerly the co-founder and CEO of LinuxCare, the Linux services and certification business that became server provisioning vendor Levanta Inc in May 2004.

As CTO Tyde will lead all technical initiatives for the FSG, including the improvement of its certification and test offerings, and will also work with FSG members, which include system vendors such as IBM Corp and Hewlett Packard Co, Linux distributors such as Red Hat Inc and Novell Corp, and ISVs such as Veritas Software Corp.

The FSG has appointed a new director of marketing, Amanda McPherson, as it looks to raise its profile and communicate its members outside the core industry membership.
