The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012 in Las Vegas will see mobile devices hogging most of the limelight, according to the research firm Canalys.

It is expected that most people would be eyeing the Ultrabook category, which will outshine the pads.

Canalys Analyst Tim Coulling said Ultrabooks show that much needed and long overdue innovation in the notebook market. "With increased battery life and portability, the continued development of the Ultrabook will bring some of the features that consumers love about pads to the notebook space," says Coulling.

Pads would lag behind Ultrabooks at this show, as most of the pads showcased last year were either commercial disasters or were not launched.

According to Coulling, pad sales are mostly happening now in mature markets, as many consumers are adding them to their electronic products collection.

Canalys research notes that there is more concentration than ever on mobile computing devices, as around 54m pads were shipped and over 772m smart phones were in use around the world, starting from the beginning of 2010 to the end of October 2011.

They are expected to replace basic phones this year, as they will witness major growth in markets such as Brazil, China, India and Indonesi, followed by Africa which is also an emerging market.
