L&H READIES NEW SPEECH TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE FALL

By CBR Staff Writer

Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products NV are readying two new releases for launch this fall. CEO, Gasten Bastiens announced the packages at the release of the UK English language version of Voice Xpress Professional (CI No 3,413). The first of these is iTranslator, which will be premiered at the Internet World trade show on October 6. ITranslator is a web-based system that will search, summarize and translate web pages and online documents. The system is based on machine translation technology that supports 15 language pairs such as French, German, Spanish and Chinese – with a further 20 including Hindi and Slavic languages in development. The iTranslation service will be available as a server-based system – for corporate extranet and intranet use; as an L&H service – companies can access the translation service as needed from an L&H server; and as cut-down search and translation service from a local PC. Bastiens talked up the virtues of a machine translation service for business users, claiming a real-time translation speed of 10 pages per minute and users can customize the lexicon for specific business sectors.
