South Korean monitors and panels maker LG Display has developed an 18-inch flexible display that can be rolled up into 3cm cylinder.

The flexible OLED panel offers a screen resolution of 1200 X 810 with almost 1 million mega-pixels and has a curvature radius of 30R, which can be rolled into the tiny cylinder without affecting the display.

The break though can allow the company to develop rollable TVs of more than 50 inches in coming days.

LG Display senior vice president and head of the R&D Center In-Byung Kang said, "LG Display pioneered the OLED TV market and is now leading the next-generation applied OLED technology."

"We are confident that by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches, which will have transmittance of more than 40 percent and a curvature radius of 100R, thereby leading the future display market." Kang said.

Instead of conventional plastic, the company has used high molecular substance-based polyimide film as the backplane of the flexible panel instead of conventional plastic to achieve the maximum curvature radius.

The polyimide film claimed to help in minimising thickness of the panel as well as improving its flexibility.

The company has also unveiled 18 inch transparent OLED panel which offers 30% transmittance by using transparent pixel design technology.

In the transparent panel, the company lowered the haze to 2% by using circuit devices and film components which could pave way for transparent display.

Compared to the transmittance of existing transparent LCD panels, the transparent display claimed to offer improved transmittance.
