LG Powercom deploys Motorola’s DOCSIS 3.0 channel bonding technology

Plans to launch IPTV services to cable modem customers

By CBR Staff Writer

South Korean telecom operator LG Powercom has selected Motorola’s DOCSIS 3.0 channel bonding technology for the deployment of its first DOCSIS 3.0 certified cable modems, reportedly capable of delivering up to 160Mbps throughput to customers. The deployment was completed in March 2009.

Motorola has provided its DOCSIS 3.0 bronze qualified BSR 64000 Integrated Cable Modem Termination System (I-CMTS)/Edge Routing platform.

Motorola claims that its I-CMTS system is also compatible with existing infrastructure including DOCSIS 1.x, 2.0 cable modems. Moreover, operators can expand system capacity by adding multiple TX32 downstream modules and in the future, RX series upstream modules, to offer additional scalability and flexibility to meet growing customer demand for ultra-broadband internet services, said Motorola.

LG Powercom plans to launch IPTV services to cable modem customers together with 100Mbps internet access services in April 2009.

Inho Suh, head of technology at LG Powercom, said: By implementing Motorola’s I-CMTS solution, we can utilize our HFC network investment to offer new tiered ultra-broadband services, providing customers with access to high-quality communications services at a competitive price that will help create a knowledge-based society in Korea.
