LexisNexis unveils semantic search technology for patent research

Includes tools to create meaningful queries

By CBR Staff Writer

LexisNexis, a provider of content-enabled workflow offerings, has launched transparent semantic search technology for its intellectual property (IP) research products, enabling users to find relevant patent search results.

The company claims that through a development alliance with Pure Discovery, it has become the first provider of legal information services to integrate the power of semantic search technology with familiar Boolean search technology, giving the user greater control over the patent research process via a user interface that matches their typical daily workflow.

According to the LexisNexis, the new semantic search features four objectives in online search such as each query is enhanced by machine intelligence and shown to the user for understanding and engagement; provides users the ability to add, delete, increase or decrease the importance of all query words in a visual query interface querycloud; and Semantic search platform to associate semantic searches to virtually any index.

In addition, the LexisNexis index includes semantic intelligence from more than 10 million full-text patent documents from the US patent and trademark office’s patent index, as well as Elsevier journal articles and other documents, the company said.

Peter Vanderheyden, vice president of LexisNexis, said: “With semantic search technology we have changed the very nature of online patent research by providing users with an additional means of researching patent and non-patent prior art. This alliance will provide users with tools to create more meaningful queries, allowing them to obtain more precise results by using semantic technology to enhance their Boolean search strategies.”
