Still growing its IP-only international network through investment and acquisition, Level 3 Communications Inc has agreed to buy miknet Internet Based Services GmbH, a business-to- business internet access provider (IAP) headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Miknet was founded in 1996 and boasts 50 points of presence (POPs). It joins Geonet, Ultraline and Xcom as this year’s additions to Level 3’s stable. Level 3 has interests in Asia as well as Europe and the US, and owns access on trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific cables. It says it expects to complete the US intercity portion of its network by 2001, although it could begin offering services as early as the third quarter of 1998.
