GSI, which is responsible for assembling and managing Verizon’s new network, will house switching and transmission equipment and related network interconnection equipment in Level 3’s Gateway centers in Los Angeles and Miami. GSI will occupy a combined total of approximately 3,500 square feet in both locations.

We are extremely pleased to be working with Verizon, a leading communications company formed by the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE last year, said Kevin O’Hara, Level 3’s president and chief operating officer. We look forward to providing GSI with the broadband services it needs to operate its network hubs, so the company can provide its customers with the most reliable services possible.

Level 3’s Los Angeles Gateway will serve as the Verizon global network’s communications hub for the western United States, connecting Verizon’s customers there with western Canada, Asia and Mexico. Level 3’s (3)Link Private Line service connects Verizon in Los Angeles to the company’s international gateway switch in New York, from which GSI will provide connections to eastern Canada and Europe.

Level 3’s Miami Gateway will serve as the Verizon global network’s communications hub for connections to the Caribbean, Latin America and South America.

Verizon announced plans in February for its global network, which will link the United States with major commercial and financial centers in Europe, Asia, Australia, Mexico and Canada. Links are already operating between New York and London; New York and Toronto; Seattle and Vancouver; Los Angeles and Mexico City; and between Honolulu and Hong Kong, Tokyo and Sydney.
