William Amelio, who was the former Asia-Pacific chief for Dell, has been given the top job at China-based Lenovo, the company said yesterday.
Amelio replaces Stephen Ward, who already worked for IBM when Lenovo bought it for $1.25bn. Ward will become a consultant to Lenovo.
The new appointment has been widely viewed as a move by Lenovo to pursue more profitable growth. Previously, Amelio worked with Ward at IBM, for about five years, as head of its PC operations.
