Lenovo, Google to make first Project Tango 3D phone for consumers

News: Users will be able to create three-dimensional image of a flat photo.

By CBR Staff Writer

Lenovo is planning to become the first smartphone maker to release a smartphone with Google’s Project Tango, with the first product slated for a summer 2016 release.

The $500 smartphone is expected to be less than 6.5 inches in size, powered by a Qualcomm processor, and will feature three cameras ‘RGB, Fisheye and Depth’ to facilitate 3D mapping.

The technology will allow the device to map the 3D space around the user by using a combination of cameras and sensors.

Announced at CES 2016, Google also displayed the progress it has made with Project Tango by showing how a device can be used to measure space and how it can be used to create and play 3D games.

With 3D mapping users will be able to create a three-dimensional image instead of a flat photo, and it might also let users scan locations and products, gaming and other utilities.

The companies have even invited app developers to submit their app ideas as part of the Project Tango App Incubator, with the best app receiving funding for development.

Though Lenovo will be first major manufacturer to build a smartphone based on Project Tango, last year Google rolled out a $512 tablet with a 7-inch screen, infrared sensors and two back cameras.
