Shares of Hong Kong personal computer maker and distributor Legend Holdings Ltd – partner in China of both AST Research Inc and Apple Computer Inc, fell after the company issued a warning of a possible loss for the year to March 31. Legend said it believed it had adequate banking facilities to support current business operations and remained confident about long-term prospects. Lower-than-expected global personal computer sales during the Christmas season and an oversupply of components and excess inventory of motherboards led to a cut in the price of motherboards and add-on boards, and to combat the problem, Legend had cut production volume of motherboards and add-on boards. It said slower turnover in China over the last few months was mainly due to growing competition.
