Legato Systems Inc said yesterday that users of its NetWorker data protection software can now reduce administration time by accessing and managing the application through Computer Associates Inc’s Unicenter TNG systems management application. Through the integration, companies will now be able to view storage management information from a single console, running Unicenter TNG, as opposed to pooling data from all the individual servers separately, as was the case in the past. The integration is enabled via the Legato NetWorker for Frameworks module that sits on the Unicenter console and allows an administrator to launch and view NetWorker storage servers across the network. Each storage device sends data about its status – what information it’s storing, how much data its holding and so on – to the Legato Gems application on the central console. The framework module then enables that data to be viewed through TNG. Just as centralized application and network management are key elements of creating a mission-critical environment, so is centralized administration of data and storage management resources, said Ed Cooper, Legato’s corporate director of strategic communications. In the past, you had to physically call each server in order to ascertain its status, now that can all be done from one centralized console which reduces operating costs and improves reliability, he said. The company has already announced integration with Tivoli’s TME systems management software last year and Cooper said it plans to introduce a module to allow interoperability with Hewlett-Packard’s OpenVision some time later this year. Legato NetWorker for Frameworks modules is available immediately and costs $11,500. á
