Can a 72 year-old former captain of industry be the man to save Apple Computer Inc? Rumors from the company’s Cupertino headquarters suggest that acting CEO Steve Jobs left a board meeting a clearly unhappy man. But Lee Iacocca – famous as the person who saved Chrysler Corp – was seen touring the company’s headquarters after arriving by helicopter with Jobs. Reports suggest that a board meeting had been hurriedly convened as Oracle Corp’s Larry Ellison turned up wearing shorts and a sports top. Iacocca’s background in metal-bashing may seem an unlikely preparation for computers but he recently emerged as a director of an electrical bike manufacturer. I spent 50 years polluting the world, Iacocca said. Now it’s time to do something cleaner and better. Sounds just the man for Apple.
