LE has constructed an 85km high capacity digital network circling London with reach into the city’s busiest districts. The network has been laid alongside the company’s existing electricity distribution network in London and is supported by a portfolio of more than 17,000 secure and managed properties, which house electricity equipment that could be used to accommodate masts for mobile phone operators.

Our current backbone network already boasts more river crossings than any other carrier and, thanks to the available 5,500km of duct in LE Group’s 30,000km of electricity network, there is no competing alternative network operator capable of delivering the same access to customers at such impressive value for money, affirmed Kevin Morton, managing director of LE’s London Power Networks (LPN) subsidiary, in a press statement.
With the backbone network completed, initial services are now available. The new LE unit expects to offer full backbone connectivity by the end of March 2002 and total network services will become increasingly available to the carrier and ISP markets over the next three months. Further network construction after Q1 2002 will focus on the development of access infrastructure extending beyond the existing backbone network.
