This weekend could be the last chance for businesses and users to disable the dangerous CIH virus before hits its trigger date on Monday. Anti-virus researchers warn that the virus will overwrite a PC’s flash BIOS, rendering the motherboard useless. The virus is believed to have spread in the same way that all viruses now do, via the internet through emails. Opening an infected file transfers the virus onto the hard drive where it remains dormant until triggered by a PC’s internal date.

Virus expert at Network Associates (NA), Jack Clarke, says the company has known about the virus for some time and provides a fix on its web site to identify and deactivate the virus. Clarke says NA issued a warning with the fix last October. But the next few days could be the last chance to be sure your PC isn’t infected. Deleting the flash BIOS would mean that the PC will not even be able boot up, making repair impossible.
