Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd, the island’s top semiconductor maker, is expected to report a third-quarter net profit of up to NT$7.9bn ($246.9m).

This compares with NT$6.02bn ($188.1m) in the second quarter, NT$4.09bn ($127.8m) in the first quarter and NT$2.12bn ($66.3m) a year ago according to local analysts. A hefty quarter-on-quarter increase remains possible despite last month’s earthquake, said one. Because of the promising outlook for the wafer foundry businesses, the company is expected to post an all-time high net profit of up to NT$26bn ($812.5m) for 1999, compared with NT$15.34bn ($479.4m) in 1998, they said. TSMC is due to report its results at a briefing for institutional investors on October 22.
