To that end the LAPD has begun testing gas propelled tracking darts. These GPS darts can be fired from the radiator of a police cruiser into an offending vehicle, allowing police officers to track the vehicle from a console in their vehicle.
If successful the system, pioneered by a company called Starchase, would allow the police to locate any tagged vehicle without endangering the public or officers with a high speed pursuit.
The LAPD intends to test the system for four to six months, after which time Starchase will optimize the darts and offer them across the US. Though the company refused to reveal a price for the tracking system it said it would respect the budgets of individual police forces.
