Apropos the patent infringement case that Dr Roger Billings had has taken out against Novell Inc and its customer, Bank Of America: Billings claims that NetWare is based on work he patented in 1987, and last month the US courts blocked a move by the defendents to move the case to Utah; other network manufacturers may feel rather queasy given Billings’ recent conversation with Network Week; he claims there is nothing very special about the way Novell constructs its systems and that the patent covers any system where a database is running on a file server, which seems to cover just about everyone.
