A survey by Man and Machine found that 82% of teachers, ICT managers and Ofsted inspectors in secondary education said a lack of IT budget was holding back students interested in IT or Computer Aided Design.
The effects of this lack of investment was already being felt in industry, with 69% of employers in a CBI survey admitting that they have to invest in extra training to bring employees’ IT skills up to scratch.
The Government has promised to spend an extra £230m to schools for IT this year.
The results of the survey show that the money is certainly not being invested in preparing pupils for work in the IT sector. It is clear that there is a real demand for technology by students and staff in the education sector and if this isn’t addressed soon, future employees are going to suffer greatly when they begin working, said Tim Seaman, managing director of Man and Machine.
