L M Ericsson AB of Stockholm claims to be a step closer to the development a commercially viable optical switch. Researchers in Stockholm have developed a new integrated optical switching device that can be interfaced directly to to standard single mode optical fibres. The switch architecture also means that it can be used as a broadcast switch. Optical switching offers virtually unlimited bandwidth for applications like colour video, making it the key to full-scale Integrated Services Digital Networking.
