KT Technology Pte Ltd of Singapore has come up with a plug-in Pocket Hard Disk, or PHd, that it claims can store up to 205Mb. The company reckons the device is ideal for storing and removing sensitive data and is likely to be a real hit with software vendors, who can use it to run demonstrations. The ‘PHd’ is designed for MS-DOS desktop personal computers. It plugs into the printer socket of the host computer and is powered by a special 5V AC adaptor that plugs into the keyboard socket. KT Technology warns against using adaptors other than its own as the power supply to the system must be very accurately regulated. The disk is based on a Seagate Technology Inc drive to which KT Technology has added its own controller chip and drivers. The drivers can be loaded onto the host computer’s own hard drive or a floppy drive via a system disk. The PHd’s dimensions are 10.2 by 6.7 by 1.2 and it can stand up to 150Gs shock when not operating and 2Gs when in use. It runs under DR-DOS and MS-DOS 5.0. It is available now through KT Technology in Singapore, the US, Holland, Germany and Austria, priced between GBP200 and GBP550 depending on capacity: there are 40Mb, 60Mb, 80Mb, 120Mb and 205Mb versions. KT also supplies the all-important adaptor, and a battery pack and charger for an extra GBP50 – but unfortunately UK stocks of these have temporarily run dry.
